Origins of the Department related to 1929, when in the Geological Department of the Dnepropetrovsk Mining Institute was organized by the Department exploration and drilling. Later it was renamed the Department of "intelligence matter", and in 1957 in the department "Technology exploration of mineral deposits."

In 1930 occurred the first set of students to drilling department. Later training in drilling was carried out at day-time department, faculty correspondence and higher engineering courses (AGE). The total number of years, the department prepared more than 2,500 mining engineers - boring.
